The people of San Sebastian, PR are nicknamed “pepinos” because the town’s original name was San Sebastian de las Vegas del Pepino. The name “del Pepino” comes from the local hill with a chalky, white face that looked like a cucumber (“pepino” in Spanish).
San Sebastian is also known as “hammock town” for the annual hammock festival where traditional handmade hammocks are on display and available for purchase.
